Terms of use – Stats NZ API Portal 

1. Acceptance of terms 

By registering for and using the Stats NZ API Portal, you agree to comply with these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, you must not use the service. 

2. Permitted use 

Content available through the API Portal is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. You may use, share, and adapt the data, including for commercial purposes, provided you give appropriate credit to Stats NZ and do not misrepresent the data or attempt to re-identify individuals. 3. Account and API key responsibilities 

The API key and account may be assigned to an individual, team, or organisation. The account holder is responsible for: 

  • ensuring the API key is securely stored and used only by authorised personnel 

  • preventing unauthorised access or misuse of the account or API key 

  • not sharing the API key outside the designated team or organisation 

  • not using the API key to impersonate another user or organisation 

  • notifying Stats NZ immediately if the API key or account is compromised or misused. 

Stats NZ reserves the right to suspend or revoke access if misuse or unauthorised activity is detected. 

4. Data accuracy and availability 

Stats NZ makes reasonable efforts to ensure the accuracy and availability of data provided through the API services. However, we do not guarantee that the data is complete, current, or error-free, and we may modify or discontinue the service at any time without notice. 

5. Security and monitoring 

Stats NZ may monitor usage of the API Portal and API services to ensure compliance with these Terms of Use. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate access if misuse or unauthorised activity is detected. 

6. Termination of access 

Stats NZ may terminate or suspend your access to the API Portal at any time, with or without notice, for any reason including breach of these Terms of use. 

7. Disclaimer and liability 

Stats NZ provides the API Portal 'as is' and disclaims all warranties, express or implied.  

Stats NZ will not in any circumstances be liable to you, in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise for any loss or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with your use of, or inability to use, the API portal, or any breach of these Terms of Use. 

If for any reason Stats NZ cannot rely on the above exclusion of liability, Stats NZ’s liability to you, or any other person bound by these Terms of Use, for any loss or damage associated with your use of the API portal in compliance with these terms and conditions will be limited to $100, and in no event will Stats NZ be liable to you, for any loss of profit, savings, goodwill or business opportunity or for any indirect or consequential loss resulting from that loss or damage. 

8. Indemnity 

You agree to indemnify Stats NZ and hold Stats NZ harmless for any loss or damage suffered by Stats NZ, or any other party, as a result of a breach of these Terms of Use, your use of API portal, or the failure to keep your API key secure.  

9. Privacy 

Our treatment of your personal information is described in our Privacy Statement. In agreeing to these Terms of Use, you will be taken to have read and agreed to the terms of our Privacy Statement. 

10. Changes to terms 

Stats NZ may update these Terms of use from time to time. Continued use of the API Portal after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
